Jeanne Mayouego Kouam ten\u00eda problemas de visi\u00f3n. Su padre la llev\u00f3 a ver a un oftalm\u00f3logo que, en una habitaci\u00f3n muy oscura, le hizo un examen llamado retinoscopia. La retinoscopia es una t\u00e9cnica utilizada para determinar el error de refracci\u00f3n del ojo o lo bien que alguien puede ver, iluminando el ojo con luz para observar el reflejo en la retina. Esta visita al oftalm\u00f3logo tuvo un profundo impacto en la vida de la Dra. Kouam. Se sinti\u00f3 inspirada para aprender m\u00e1s sobre oftalmolog\u00eda en un intento de explicar su tratamiento a su padre. Kouam trabaja como oftalm\u00f3loga en el Hospital de Distrito de Nylon, un hospital p\u00fablico situado en una zona urbana de Doula (Camer\u00fan). La mayor\u00eda de sus pacientes son agricultores. Durante la temporada de lluvias, a estos pacientes les resulta imposible llegar al hospital. Acuden al centro m\u00e9dico con cataratas maduras que se han endurecido en sus ojos y no tienen dinero para tratarse. Al igual que sus pacientes ciegos por cataratas que no pueden permitirse la cirug\u00eda, la Dra. Kouam es uno de los miles de m\u00e9dicos de \u00c1frica que necesitan desesperadamente formaci\u00f3n para eliminar la ceguera por cataratas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_row et_pb_row_2\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et_pb_column_3  et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et-last-child\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_2  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>Afortunadamente, gracias a generosos donantes como usted, HelpMeSee pudo cubrir los gastos de formaci\u00f3n de la Dra. Kouam. Viaj\u00f3 a Mumbai, India, y asisti\u00f3 a nuestro curso de formaci\u00f3n que instru\u00eda a los m\u00e9dicos que realizan la extracci\u00f3n extracapsular de cataratas (ECCE) sobre la cirug\u00eda manual de cataratas con incisi\u00f3n peque\u00f1a (MSICS). Muchas personas ciegas por cataratas no tienen m\u00e1s remedio que confiar en sus seres queridos para que cuiden de ellas. Por \u00faltimo, como los pacientes de cataratas no pueden ver, tampoco pueden realizar su trabajo cotidiano para mantenerse y caen en una pobreza a\u00fan peor.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_7  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>En una de las situaciones m\u00e1s desafortunadas para uno de los pacientes del Dr. Kouam, un agricultor de 70 a\u00f1os con muchos hijos sufr\u00eda ceguera por cataratas. Soport\u00f3 malos tratos f\u00edsicos y humillaciones p\u00fablicas cuando la gente de su pueblo se burlaba de \u00e9l y le tiraba piedras. El hombre se sent\u00eda aislado, deprimido y no pod\u00eda comer bien. Afortunadamente, el Dr. Kouam le practic\u00f3 una cirug\u00eda manual de cataratas de peque\u00f1a incisi\u00f3n que le devolvi\u00f3 la vista y mejor\u00f3 notablemente su calidad de vida.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_8  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>La Dra. Kouam se dedica a ofrecer la mejor atenci\u00f3n a sus pacientes. Cuando empez\u00f3 a trabajar en el Hospital de Distrito de Nylon, el centro m\u00e9dico carec\u00eda de unidad oftalmol\u00f3gica. Con el apoyo del personal administrativo del hospital, la Dra. Kouam dedic\u00f3 su tiempo y esfuerzo a construir la cl\u00ednica oftalmol\u00f3gica del hospital.
