From providing hands-on skills development outside the operating room to reducing complication rates in the operating room,<sup>2,5<\/sup> VR has quickly become a promising tool for training the next generation of ophthalmologists.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent peer-reviewed paper in <em>Clinical Ophthalmology<\/em>, \u201csimulators represent a broader shift in ophthalmology, where VR is being adopted to enhance not only surgical education but also clinical education and patient care.\u201d <sup>6<\/sup> Although the authors cite benefits of this educational approach extending beyond reduced complication rates to include improved real-life surgical outcomes and the transfer of skills across various surgical approaches, they also site the cost of VR training as a persistent barrier.<\/p>\n<p>According to data in the <em>Clinical Ophthalmology<\/em> paper, the cost associated with one available VR training system, EyeSi, is approximately $250,000 for the initial investment and $19,690 per trainee per year in recurring costs.<sup>6<\/sup> For many training programs, particularly those in lower-income regions and for academic institutions with limited budgets, such capital and maintenance expenses are prohibitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22985\" src=\"https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Blog-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Blog-image.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Blog-image-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Blog-image-1024x410.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Blog-image-768x307.jpg 768w, https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Blog-image-1536x614.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Blog-image-18x7.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>An Affordable, Scalable Model\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At its core, the mission of HelpMeSee is to eliminate avoidable blindness due to cataracts through <a href=\"https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/es\/simulation-based-training\/\">scalable surgical simulation training<\/a>. Therefore, rather than selling the HelpMeSee <a href=\"https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/es\/program-features\/\">Simulador de cirug\u00eda ocular<\/a>, HelpMeSee provides access to its high-fidelity training system.<\/p>\n<p>The shift in service model from equipment ownership to training access helps remove the capital investment and additional cost barriers that often limit VR surgical simulation adoption. HelpMeSee offers a subscription-based, service-oriented approach that eliminates not only the hardware purchase cost but also installation fees, and maintenance contracts.
