Samuel Kwizera knew he wanted to make a difference in his home of Burundi. He was a General Practitioner in the military and witnessed how bad eye disease and untreated cataracts were in his country. He wanted to do more, so Dr. Kwizera signed up for a class to learn Chirurgie de la cataracte par petite incision manuelle<\/a> (MSICS) at HelpMeSee\u2019s partner in China, the Eye Hospital Wenzhou Medical University.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Le Burundi est tr\u00e8s pauvre. Le pays a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sign\u00e9 comme l'endroit le moins heureux du monde par le World Happiness Report 2018. Comme de nombreux pays en d\u00e9veloppement, le Burundi souffre d'une p\u00e9nurie d'ophtalmologues, ce qui entra\u00eene une accumulation de personnes en attente d'une op\u00e9ration de la cataracte. Alors que la cataracte peut \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme une \"\u00e9tape de la vie\" pour nous, de nombreuses personnes en Afrique perdent la vue simplement parce qu'elles n'ont pas acc\u00e8s \u00e0 un chirurgien de la cataracte. Ceux qui ne voient pas ne peuvent pas travailler et deviennent d\u00e9pendants des autres. Elles perdent leur volont\u00e9 de vivre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But HelpMeSee is changing that with our MSICS training program for those who want to help, like Dr. Kwizera.\u00a0 Many Burundians live in rural areas and cannot travel to the cities for cataract surgery.\u00a0 These conditions make MSICS and HelpMeSee\u2019s simulation-based training program<\/a> a sustainable solution to address cataract blindness in Burundi and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
