Elle a su qu'elle voulait devenir ophtalmologue lorsqu'elle a re\u00e7u sa premi\u00e8re paire de lunettes \u00e0 l'\u00e2ge de cinq ans. Le cabinet de l'ophtalmologiste, avec son \u00e9quipement optique, et sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 revoir le monde, c'\u00e9tait comme de la magie. Danielle Beleho, originaire de Yaound\u00e9, au Cameroun, a voulu partager cette exp\u00e9rience avec d'autres. Cette exp\u00e9rience a chang\u00e9 sa jeune vie.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Danielle attended the first cataract surgery course taught in collaboration with the Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute that used the HelpMeSee Eye Surgery Simulator for the rapid and safe acquisition of surgical skills. Danielle and three other trainees learned a modern technique called Chirurgie de la cataracte par petite incision manuelle<\/a> or MSICS, to remove cataracts. MSICS is safer for patients and less expensive to perform, as the cost is a critical factor in these instances when many of the poor cannot afford to pay for their treatment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Conscient que le probl\u00e8me de la c\u00e9cit\u00e9 due \u00e0 la cataracte n\u00e9cessitait une attention particuli\u00e8re, le Cameroun a adopt\u00e9 le \"droit \u00e0 la vue\" de l'Organisation mondiale de la sant\u00e9 en 2002. En 2017, l'Institut ophtalmologique Magrabi ICO Cameroon, l'h\u00f4pital o\u00f9 travaille le Dr Danielle Beleho, a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par l'Africa Eye Foundation gr\u00e2ce au fondateur et principal donateur, le Dr Akef el-Maghraby. Magrabi est le premier d'un r\u00e9seau d'h\u00f4pitaux de soins ophtalmologiques int\u00e9gr\u00e9s qui seront construits dans toute l'Afrique. En cr\u00e9ant Magrabi, le Dr el-Maghraby a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \"Mon objectif est de rendre les soins ophtalmologiques de haute qualit\u00e9 accessibles au peuple camerounais, quelle que soit sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 payer\".<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

While these initiatives make progress, the root cause of the high prevalence of cataract blindness in Cameroon<\/a> is still unaddressed. There are only 3.6 ophthalmologists per million people in Cameroon. By comparison, the US has over SO ophthalmologists per million people. This number more than ten times the amount in Cameroon. There just aren\u2019t enough cataract surgeons in Cameroon to treat those impacted. The older techniques used by many cataract surgeons who operate on the poor must be upgraded to safer and less expensive procedures that can be performed more often. This is where the HelpMeSee mission of training enhances the great work Magrabi can perform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Danielle a appris les \u00e9tapes de construction du tunnel de la proc\u00e9dure MSICS sur le simulateur de chirurgie oculaire avec le Dr Jean-Marie Andre et les m\u00e9decins de HelpMeSee au centre de d\u00e9veloppement de HelpMeSee \u00e0 Mumbai, en Inde. La proc\u00e9dure MSICS est particuli\u00e8rement adapt\u00e9e au Cameroun. Il faut moins de 30 minutes pour l'effectuer. La MSICS permet de r\u00e9duire les complications par rapport \u00e0 l'ancienne forme de chirurgie de la cataracte, l'extraction extracapsulaire de la cataracte, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son incision auto-obturante. La c\u00e9cit\u00e9 due \u00e0 la cataracte et les 20 millions de personnes touch\u00e9es ne seraient pas un probl\u00e8me si nous pouvions former davantage de professionnels de la sant\u00e9 oculaire comme Danielle. C'est pourquoi nous avons besoin de votre soutien continu pour des formations suppl\u00e9mentaires en Afrique et pour l'installation de notre simulateur de chirurgie oculaire dans les instituts d'enseignement afin d'augmenter et d'am\u00e9liorer leurs capacit\u00e9s de formation \u00e0 la chirurgie de la cataracte.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

L'un des premiers patients de Danielle apr\u00e8s sa formation \u00e9tait Mvondo. Les produits de Mvondo lui avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 vol\u00e9s sur le march\u00e9 de l'agriculteur au Cameroun en raison de sa perte de vision due \u00e0 la cataracte. Ayant recouvr\u00e9 la vue, Mvondo s'est sentie \u00e0 nouveau en s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
