{"id":1038,"date":"2017-05-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/7a7df05b52dab8495fdeb023c7d876bd1135a5b7.helpmesee.org\/aisatou-bahs-story-a-nurses-vision\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T18:25:29","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T18:25:29","slug":"aisatou-bahs-story-a-nurses-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/fr\/aisatou-bahs-story-a-nurses-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"L'histoire d'Aisatou Bah : La vision d'une infirmi\u00e8re"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an old African proverb that \u201cIt takes a village\u2026\u201d to raise a child, and that\u2019s true to this day in The Gambia, where we started working with local surgeons and community health agents to <a href=\"https:\/\/helpmesee.org\/fr\/cataract-blindness-treated-by-training-cataract-specialists\/\">treat cataract blindness.<\/a> And that saying still rings true for Aisatou Bah, a 26-year-old nurse we met at Sheikh Zayed Regional Eye Care Center in Kanifing. Aisatou lives in a nearby village about 4 miles from the hospital along with her family, working hard to build a stronger community..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Aisatou graduated from university, she knew she wanted to improve healthcare for her friends and neighbors. Growing up in The Gambia shaped her perspective. \u201cWhen you look at the setting in The Gambia, you can see there are people who need care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aisatou\u2019s motivations came in part from her family\u2019s experience. Several years ago she saw her grandfather suffering from cataract blindness before he passed away. \u201cWhen I became a nurse,\u201d she said, \u201cI decided to specialize in ophthalmology. I knew that when someone has cataracts, [they] must be treated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, blurred vision from cataracts in The Gambia was considered \u201cjust part of old age.\u201d Aisatou told us she remembered when people with cataracts would first visit traditional spiritual healers instead of going to the hospital. This option, of course, did nothing to correct patients\u2019 vision loss. Gradually people are becoming more aware now, she says, and patients are coming to health centers to receive eye exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As word spreads through the community about the treatments available to prevent blindness, Aisatou has noticed an increase of patients to her health center, Sheikh Zayed, which now sees about 75 patients a week. Aisatou believes it is her responsibility to help patients with any number of eye care issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite being busy with her family and nursing work, Aisatou told us she is studying to become a cataract surgeon someday, using the training and tools we provided her to make a more significant impact on her neighbors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I have the knowledge I will be able to help my family, to help my friends.
