Cataract blindness or visual impairment affects 100 million lives worldwide, but women bear the greatest burden
Women are far less likely to receive sight-restoring cataract surgery. Too often, the youngest daughter in a family must leave school or give up work to care for a mother or grandmother living in preventable cataract blindness. This cycle of lost education, lost income, and lost opportunity repeats across generations.
As featured in the Empowered program, HelpMeSee is bringing global awareness to these disparities and the extraordinary impact of training cataract surgeons in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS). Each cataract surgeon trained can potentially perform up to 30,000 cataract surgeries over the course of their career reaching patients in the most underserved corners of the world.
